About us
Our name comes from the classic Japanese film Tampopo.
Since 2005
Ramen on Anzac Avenue
Tanpopo Ramen opened on Anzac Avenue in August 2005. Since then, we’ve welcomed people working in the city, students, local Kiwis and visitors from Japan and all around the world.
Over the years, Metro has included us in its guides to Auckland’s best cheap eats, in 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2022. In 2025, we were named one of Metro’s Top 50 Eats Under $25.
In 2020, our Tonkotsu Shoyu Ramen was also chosen as one of Auckland’s Iconic Eats, nominated by one of our longtime regulars.

Meet the chef
Our owner-chef
Born in Japan, our owner-chef has been making ramen for 29 years. He spent 14 years at his family’s popular ramen restaurant in Japan, then moved to New Zealand in 2011 and worked here as a ramen chef under the former owner. In 2021, he took over Tanpopo Ramen Auckland CBD. Today he carries on the flavours our customers have loved since 2005.

Our ramen
Rich tonkotsu broth is at the heart of our menu, in shoyu, shio and miso, along with our creamy Tanpopo Ramen made with sesame paste and roasted garlic oil. For something lighter, try our chicken-broth Shoyu Ramen or Yuzu Shio Ramen. Our Vegetarian Miso Ramen is also vegan-friendly.
We also serve a selection of Japanese and NZ craft beers.

A warm welcome
We’re lucky to have so many wonderful customers, and many of them have been coming to see us for years. One young customer loves our ramen so much that she drew us a picture, and we still treasure it.
Whether you’re popping in for a quick lunch or catching up with friends over dinner, we’d love to see you.
